the hole story

So what do I think about the hole story? I'ts funny, well-shot, ruminative. There are some really great sequences. But there's no real narrative drive, little intrigue to pull you along. The moments of quirkiness and insight aren't consistent enough to keep it going. The best scene comes very early on, when Karpo's shooting an intro and his cell phone rings. The camera stays on as he wanders farther and farther away on the frozen lake, his half of the phone conversation picked up clearly by the wireless mike until he eventually wanders far enough that the mike goes out of range and one of the crew pulls him back, while he continues the conversation. But that's the peak. It's too bad the film doesn't mention that the hole killed someone.
