You know those wet paint signs in the subway - the ones with the red letters on the white background? Well, there's a form of expression, which some would consider an art form, where people rip those signs apart and re-arrange the letters to spell something else, then tape the result up in public view to be consumed by everyone from commuters to homeless guys.
In an effort to package this art form and make it accessible to the masses, I've produced a comprehensive reference of many if not all of the possible words and phrases you can make from the letters on WET PAINT signs. What follows is the collective efforts of myself and numerous linguists (who will go uncredited here), collaborating trans-continentally... using "email".
If you can only find one sign, you'll be able to spell:
WET PAIN
AINT WET
TWIN PET
I WEPT
WE AINT
If you're able to collect two signs, your possibilities increase to:
TAINT
PITA TENT
TAI PEI
TWINE PINATA
TEN PIN
I EAT PIE
Five signs:
NINETEEN TEN PENNY
NEAT HIPPIE
A WET PITTER PATTER
10 signs:
PEE IN THE WIND. I WENT 'TWEEN THE PINES.
THAI ICE TEA, TEN P. I HAD A NIP AT THE PIER.
20 signs:
WE PREVENT A WEST AFRICAN INTERVENTION.
PIN THE FIG LEAF ON LENIN
30 signs:
WE HEARD THE NEW WILCO PLATTER AT A WALMART IN NEWTON. WAS RAD.
40 signs:
IN ORDER TO MORE CLEARLY DESCRIBE THE SCOPE OF OUR SERVICES AND TALENTS WE ARE TAKING ON THE NAME OF OUR PARENT COMPANY.
50:
THE VOLATILE SITUATION, WHAT HAS BEEN CALLED THE "POSEY WAR" AND THE "LAST INDIAN UPRISING" OCCURRED BECAUSE OF A RELATIVELY INSIGNIFICANT AFFAIR THAT STARTED WHEN TWO YOUNG UTES ROBBED A SHEEP CAMP, KILLED A CALF, AND BURNED A BRIDGE. THE CULPRITS VOLUNTARILY TURNED THEMSELVES IN, STOOD TRIAL, BUT THEN ESCAPED FROM THE SHERIFF'S GRASP. THE TOWNPEOPLE MOVED QUICKLY TO GET NOT ONLY THE TWO BOYS BUT POSEY AS WELL, WHO BY THIS TIME HAD BECOME SYNONYMOUS WITH ALL OF THE ILL WILL FELT BETWEEN THESE FACTIONS.
That should be enough to get the wheels turning. Print out this web page and carry it around with you. Never let it out of your sight. Then, if you come across an intact wet paint sign, think of it as free art supplies and get to work!
