Pig

The goal: to be the first player to reach or exceed 100 points.

To play: on a player's turn, he rolls two dice and keeps a running total of his successive throws. After each throw he has a choice of rolling again or surrendering the dice to the next player and adding the current total to any previous score ("plateau"), establishing a new plateau. If he rolls a one ("pig") on either die (or both), he forfeits any points accrued during his current turn (his score reverts to the previous plateau) and he must surrender the dice to the next player. Variation: a roll of snake-eyes (double ones) is a "pig-out" and the player's score reverts to zero. Variation 2: game is played with a single die.

Strategy: an analysis of a solitaire version (in which the player pays one unit for each turn) indicates that an initial plateau of 25 is optimal. With the introduction of opponents the optimal strategy complicates. Optimal play for two-person single-die pig is discussed herein.
